ALVINSTON TAKES 2-0 SERIES LEAD

The Alvinston Indians returned home on Tuesday night, for game 2 of their best of 5 final series versus the St. Thomas Storm.  Once again a good crowd was on hand to enjoy the game, with the game featuring starters Ryan Cummings for St. Thomas, and Kyle Crawford for Alvinston.

After Alvinston escaped the top of the first allowing no runs with St. Thomas having threatened, Joe Triest started the bottom half of the first inning, when he hit a solo homerun to lead off the game, for an early 1-0 lead for Alvinston.  However, in the top of the second, St. Thomas returned the favour, counting their first run when Brent Crocker walked, was sacrificed to second and then tied the game on a flyout by Aaron Gould.  Crawford then settled in a bit for Alvinston, as did Cummings for St. Thomas, and the game stayed at 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth, when Alvinston finally got busy with the bats, and capitalized on their opportunity.  With one out, Chapman singled, and he promptly scored the go ahead run, on an RBI triple that was smacked down the line by Brad Young.  Jeff Ingram was then intentionally walked, to put runners on first and third with one out.  The second out was then recorded for St. Thomas on a strikeout, and pinch hitter Doug Charlton came to the plate for Alvinston, and delivered in the clutch, roping a ball at the second baseman that he was unable to handle, scoring Young from third base for a 3-1 lead.  Ingram was now at third, and Aaron Stocking was reentered for Charlton at first, and Andy Triest came to the plate and delivered as well.  Triest took an 0-2 pitch through the hole on the second base side, singling to score Ingram.  Again, runners were at third and first, now with Joe Triest up to bat, and Triest was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Stocking then scored on a wild pitch, and then St. Thomas was able to get the final out, but not before Alvinston counted 4 runs, and owned a 5-1 lead.

Brad Young had came in in the sixth for Crawford, recording three outs, and did the same in the seventh, allowing the first hit of the game by Troy Rick, but not allowing any damage, as Alvinston won by the final score of 5-1.  Game 3 goes Tuesday in Fingal at 8:00pm.

Young earned the win for Alvinston in two innings of relief allowing only the one hit, and he recorded one strikeout.  He was also a difference maker at the dish for Alvinston, going 3/3 for Alvinston with a single, double, and triple, a run scored, and the game winning hit and RBI.  Crawford did well as the starter for Alvinston as well, going 5 innings, allowing no hits, and 4 walks, while striking out 5.  Cummings again suffered the loss without much run support from his club. He gave up 8 hits - 4 in the 6th inning and recorded 8 strikeouts.

STORM WIN TO FORCE GAME 4

St. Thomas Storm forced game 4 in the STDMFL playoff championship with a dramatic 3-2 win over Alvinston Indians, Tuesday night in Fingal.

The Storm struck first in the 3rd inning with 2 runs on 4 hits and a sacrifice bunt to lead 2-0. Alvinston came back with 2 runs in the 6th to even the score.
In the 7th with 1 out Dusty Brown singled and was sacrificed to 2nd base by Kevin Lynch. That set the stage for Eric Scott to drive Brown in with a clutch single, his 4th hit of the game.  Todd Winkworth pitched into the 6th inning before being relieved by Ryan Cummings, who earned the win. They combined to scatter 6 hits and record 7 strikeouts.
Brad Young pitched a complete game and suffered the loss for the Indians. He gave up 8 hits and ended with 2 strikeouts.  Dusty Brown had 3 hits and scored 2 runs in addition to Scott's 4 for 4 game.  Jeff Ingram had 2 hits and the game tying RBI for Alvinston.

Game 4 in Wednesday in Alvinston.

INDIANS LOSE GAME 3

With an opportunity to close out the series, the Alvinston Indians traveled to Fingal, to play the St. Thomas Storm on Tuesday evening, with the Storm looking to avoid elimination.

Both teams threatened early but were unable to score in the opening inning.  In the second inning, the Indians had runners on first and second with no one out, after consecutive singles by Brad Young and Jeff Ingram, but the Indians failed to count.  It was in the third inning, that the St. Thomas Storm got on the scoreboard, when they scored 2 runs to take a 2-0 lead.  The Indians failed to answer in the fourth and fifth innings, but in the sixth they finally scored.  Jamie Shields doubled for Alvinston, and then scored on an RBI single by Chris Drew, mkaing the game 2-1.  Then with 2 out, Young reached base via fielder's choice, and stole second base, and advanced to third on a pass ball, before scoring on a clutch RBI single by Jeff Ingram.  The game was now knotted at two's, heading into the bottom of the sixth, but Young stranded a runner on second base, and escaped the inning.  Alvinston caused no damage in the top of the seventh, and so heading into the bottom of the seventh, St. Thomas was looking to score a run to win the game.  Dusty Brown singled up the middle for his third single of the game with one out, was sacrificed to second by Kevin Lynch, and then scored on a 2-out game winning RBI single by Eric Scott, which was his biggest hit of four hits on the evening.  St. Thomas earned themselves a 3-2 win in game 3.

Brad Young suffered the loss for Alvinston, while Ryan Cummings got the win for St. Thomas in relief of Todd Winkworth, who threw effectively as the starter in the game for St. Thomas.  Game 4 goes tomorrow night (Wednesday) in Alvinston at 8:00pm.

INDIANS OFF TO GAME 5

The Alvinston Indians played host to the St. Thomas Storm on Thursday evening in Alvinston.  On what was a chilly night, a nice crowd was still on hand, for what ended up being a roller coaster of a game.

Alvinston and starter Kyle Crawford escaped harm in the first, when they left two St. Thomas runners on base.  Alvinston then came up to the plate in the bottom of the first and promptly scored the opening run.  Joe Triest singled to lead off the game, and scored on an RBI double by Chris Drew.  But St. Thomas had an answer in the top of the second, when three walks, an error, and three hits, led the Storm to four runs in the inning, and a early 4-1 lead in the contest.  Alvinston however, would not go away, as Joe Triest and Drew were at it again.  Triest singled, advanced to second on a pass ball, and then scored on an RBI triple by Drew.  Drew then scored on ball four to the next batter Ryan Chapman, as the ball went to the screen, to get the game close at 4-3 for St. Thomas.  Just when the Indians were starting to regain momentum, Kevin Lynch tripled off Indians pitcher Crawford to lead off the inning, and he scored on a RBI groundout by Chris Payne to go up 5-3.  The Indians would answer in the fifth.  Triest and Drew did it again by both singling, and with runners on second and third and two out, Brad Young delivered a 2 RBI double, to square the game at 5's.

Since the fourth inning, Young came in in relief of Crawford, and held St. Thomas at bay in the fourth, fifth, and sixth, but in the seventh, the Storm finally touched up Young for the go ahead run.  A clutch 2 out rbi single by Jamie Peat for St. Thomas, plated Matt Lynch, for what turned out to be the winning run, as St. Thomas won 6-5, forcing a game 5 in the series.
Ryan Cummings went the distance for the Storm, scattering 7 hits and earning a hard fought win.

Game 5 goes next Thursday night in Fingal at 8pm.

INDIANS WIN HARD FOUGHT SERIES

The Alvinston Indians travelled to Fingal on Thursday evening for game 5 of the St. Thomas & District Major Fastball League Playoff Championship. The winner would be the league champ for 2011.

Things started well for the Storm when Chris Payne clubbed a 2 run homer in the opening stanza. This came after the Indians left the bases loaded in their half of the first inning, but in the second inning, with two out, Andy Triest reached base after a bunt, stole second base, and scored on a game tying 2 run homer by Joe Triest.  In the third, Alvinston took the lead on a solo homerun by Chris Drew to lead off the inning. With a 3-2 lead, Brad Young went to work in the middle innings for Alvinston, allowing only one hit in the next three innings.  In the sixth, Andy Triest reached base via another bunt with one out, stole second base again, and scored on a clutch 2 out RBI single by Jamie Shields, making it 4-2. Joe Triest went in to run for Shields the catcher with two out, and stole second base, and then scored on another timely 2 out single by Drew. Jeff Ingram reached base via an error for Alvinston, and then Young executed the suicide squeeze scoring Drew, for an all-important 6-2 lead.  Young went to work again in the sixth allowing only one hit, and then in the seventh St. Thomas did muster one run, but the Indians cruised to the title, with a 6-3 final.  Young was the story on the mound going the distance for Alvinston, spreading 5 hits and 1 walk over 7 innings of work, to capture the win, and the series clinching victory, fanning 11 St. Thomas swingers. On the offence, Joe and Andy Triest, Shields, and Drew, made the offence jive, in winning their 6th St. Thomas & District Major Fastball League Championship.

The Indians finished their season with a 45-19 record, and will be back again in 2012! Thanks to St. Thomas for making the league's final series another great one, as it always is expected between Alvinston and St. Thomas! Thanks to all our fans for their support in 2011!
