ALVINSTON INDIANS 2010 PREVIEW
The Alvinston Indians surprised everyone including themselves in the 2009 season when they captured their fifth STDMFL Playoff Championship in 14 seasons. The Indians took Glencoe to a five game series in the semi's, before deafeating Shedden in four games in the championship. They will now be the team to chase in 2010, and will host the League's All-Star Game in mid-July in Alvinston.
Veteran pitchers John Ferguson (MVP of the playoffs) and Brad Young will headline the rotation, with youngsters Kyle Crawford, Jeff Lyons, and veteran Doug Charlton helping to toe the rubber. The rest of the team returns in the 2010 season, with one key addition being Scott D. Smith, who returns to the Indians outfield and middle of the order after taking a season off.
The infield will feature Jeff Ingram, Joe Triest, Steve Donald, Theo Metron, Chris Drew, Jamie Shields and Aaron Stocking, with Scott Smith and Metron handling the catching duties. In the outfield will be Andy Triest, Smith, Ryan Chapman, Tim Brown, and Eric Hyatt. The Indians will also outfit some youth from the Alvinston Midget team, including Davis Triest and Kenny Pumfrey including some others.
The Indians will now play on home turf on Thursday nights. They wanted to provide their local fans with a more consistent home schedule, as they often are gone on weekends to compete in tournament action. The Indians open up their tournament schedule in St. Clements from May 28-30, and follow that up the following weekend, as they make their first return to the Snapper Shootout in three seasons. They then take a weekend off, and travel to Innerkip for the qualifier in the third week of June, and then head to another qualifier in Port Huron, June 25-27 weekend. They then will return to Frankenmuth for the Pete Schwab Memorial Tournament July 16-18, for their only tournament in July. They hope that through one of the qualifiers, they can earn a berth into the 2010 ISC Championships in Midland, Michigan, August 14-21.
