2010 ASTROS PREVIEW

After finishing the 2009 season with a disappointing loss to the Alvinston Indians in the St. Thomas and District Major Fastball League (STDMFL) semi-finals, the 2008 League Champion Glencoe Astros (Stros) are striving to get back into the mix at the top of the league this year, with many familiar faces.

Returning to this year’s squad will be Player/Coach/Founding Member Kyle “Bars” Mitchell.  He brings a serious threat from the left side of the plate and outstanding defensive play all over the diamond.  Brothers Greg and Kevin Eichenburger evoke in the outfield a familiar feel and nervousness similar in the style of play to that of the Henry Boys back in the days of the Mercs.  While bringing lots of support to the middle, Jeff “Tid” Tidball and Bill “Pisky” Piskoroski manage tidy corners on the infield.  Behind the plate, you may see Cody Campbell or newcomer Matt Johnson; splitting some innings and possibly taking a few snaps at first or chasing down a bunt by third.  Burning up the bases and tracking down deep fly balls in the outfield are Brad Wolfe (yes, related to Ryan Wolfe), and Ryan Gray, a second year Stro looking to pad his stats.  Pitcher and impact player, Steve “Cookey” Cook, also a second year Stro, is all trimmed up and looking to take on the league’s pitching title.  Cookey is a driving force of this versatile squad, along with the only two players of the STDMFL to make the 2010 Team Canada Pre-Season Athlete Pool (a national pool of the top 40 fastball players), Glencoe’s own, Rowan “Foo” Lam and Mark “Marky” Johnson. Rowan brings a strong arm and crafty play to the middle infield and is always a threat at the plate with runners in scoring position, while Marky will be leading this Stros squad from centre field.  Glencoe superstar Marky, who recently finished his pro-hockey season with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the CHL, will be playing in his first season with the reigning Canadian and World Champion, Kitchener Hallmen Rivershark Twins, along side one of the game’s greatest players, Melbourne native, Ryan Wolfe. Stros’ Manager/First Base Coach, Scott Campbell is looking forward to his second year helping the squad, and in a recent interview stated, “The chemistry on this team is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. These boys come to have fun, and play hard! And at the end of the day, it’s all left right there on the field. Just like the game should be played.”

Through many years of determination, not only has this senior Glencoe Astros squad achieved new heights for area fastball players, these Stros have developed and maintained a level of fastball that the Glencoe area has come to enjoy. Bravo Boys!!!  Now, let’s play ball.
