2011 STORM PREVIEW

The 2010 season was a very successful one for the St. Thomas Storm. We won the 8th league pennant 5th playoff championship in our club's 19 year history in the STDMFL.  The last 10 years have been very successful for the Storm and this year we say goodbye to 2 guys who have played huge roles in the success of our club. In 2000, due to various circumstances the Storm were able to land a few players that helped to improve our team to the level of contenders. Two of those players were Dan Beecroft and Chris Wismer.

Dan was our ace pitcher for most of the last decade and was one of the best teammates you could ever have. He pitched many important games over the years and showed great heart and determination. He was a smart pitcher who learned how to pitch to every hitter he faced. Dan has led or been near the top in nearly every pitching category for nearly 15 years. It is very hard to pick out any one highlight but the '05 and '07 finals against Glencoe featured some great pitching duels and the '06 series against Alvinston was very exciting. Dan was also a valued member of the St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials as well as the Fingal Seniors. His excellent attitude and calming influence will be missed along with his competitiveness. Thanks for the great run, BB!

Chris Wismer was the definition of a utility player over the past 10 years. He played every position on the diamond and played them all well. Yes, even pitcher! Chris led the Storm to our first playoff title in 2001 when he batted well above .500 and had several key hits in a thrilling series with Alvinston. For the last several years we relied on him to fill the important role of catcher - a role he filled admirably. He really helped our pitchers by knowing the hitters and calling a great game. Chris was a student of the game and a great athlete.  He seemed to have a knack for getting on base when we really needed it and getting hits when it mattered most. Chris also was a key player with the Evergreen Centennials, winning back to back Canadian Championships in 2005, 2006. Wiz was also a valuable volunteer for our club over the years, helping to organize many fundraisers and team functions. Thanks for everything, Wiz!

Obviously, we have a couple of huge holes to fill.  Returning to the Storm after several years with the Aylmer/Belmont club and a season in Glanworth is pitcher Todd Winkworth. Todd will share the pitching duties with Ryan Cummings. Winky has a ton of experience and was a member of the Storm when we won our first title back in '01. He is a fiery competitor and gives all he has whenever he's on the rubber.

Also joining the Storm this season is Eric Scott.  Eric is a utility player who is an excellent fielder with speed and a very capable catcher. Eric and Todd are teammates with the Ingersol Crush who finished in the top 20 at the 2010 ISC World Tournament in Midland, Mi.
